10 Networking Slip Ups That Are Best Avoided Attending a networking event or industry night for the first time can be a daunting experience and you dont always know what to expect of it or how to conduct yourself. If you go about it in the right  way, these events can be valuable for making useful  new contacts; however go about it in the wrong way and youre at risk of making yourself look a bit silly. For some tips on how to network effectively, you can seek advice from our article on  how to power up your networking skills, however to be  sure you dont come across as awkward or make others cringe, I suggest you  avoid doing these things: 1) DONT  talk too much: Rabbiting on and on about yourself is likely to bore people and networking really should be a two way exchange. Show genuine interest in other people, take the time to ask them questions and listen attentively to what they have to say. (Source) 2) DONT  be a loner: Approaching new people can be nerve racking, but youre not going to gain anything from the event if you spend the time wandering around by yourself. Bite the bullet and spark up some conversations with other attendees. Itll get easier with practice, I promise! (Source) 3) DONt be a stalker: If youre new to networking, you  may be tempted to latch on to someone you know for moral support. But do try to reach out to other people too or youre at risk of following them around like a lost puppy, which may not be entirely appreciated. (Source) 4) DONT  interrupt: You may have something MEGA interesting to say, that you feel just cant wait to be shared, but think about how you feel when someone interrupts you. Annoying right? Listen patiently and intently to what the other person has to say and in turn they will hopefully do the same for you. (Source) 5) DONT discuss inappropriate topics: Its a professional event, so try to stay on track and maintain a professional tone in your conversations. People dont want to hear about the hot date youve got on Friday  or your pregnant dog, trust me! (Source) 6) DONT dress down: People will make a first impression built on your appearance, so make sure you dress smartly and give off a positive representation of yourself. You may well be  heading for a session in the gym afterwards, but this doesnt mean you should rock up at the event in your workout kit! At the same time, you dont want to look like youre about to hit the town either. (Source) 7) DONT get drunk: A bit of Dutch courage is fine, but dont go overboard. I think its fair to say any good new contacts youve made will soon be lost if you start dancing on the table or staggering around the room causing calamity. (Source) 8) DONT be a business card spammer: Dont just deal out your business cards willy nilly. No offence, but not everyone will want it and its likely to get thrown in the bin in that case. Get to know someone first and once a connection has been properly made you can take the next step of offering them your card. (Source) 9) DONT sell hard: Networking events are about forming relationships and getting to know people. As tempting as it may be to use  the opportunity to sell your products, it is not the time or place to do so and  follow up meetings can be arranged for this, once a connection has been made. (Source) 10) DONT be a brown noser: Sure, everyone enjoys receiving  a compliment or two, but there is a line to be crossed when it goes  from being friendly  to you coming across as  a suck up. How to Use Snapchat for Employer Branding Have you embraced Snapchat for marketing yet? Employers are fast understanding that to connect with potential employees and woo them into their workplace, being  present on social media is a huge leg up and a way to build a loyal following over time. This type of marketing  is not about the hard sell either; its about getting in front of people in a fun and inclusive way, telling stories  to paint the right picture of your company. Twitter and LinkedIn are fairly straight forward platforms to grasp, but when it comes to Snapchat, many brands are struggling to get their heads around the destructive messaging app which keeps growing and innovating.  To understand what the platform can do for  your brand, Ive spoken to Victoria Taylor, have a listen below and be sure to subscribe to the Employer Branding Podcast. Why should brands be on Snapchat? Ill say first of all brands dont need to be on Snapchat. Brands dont need to be on any social network. But I think its important for brands and businesses to recognise the year that theyre marketing in. And I think now currently with live stream and live video and the user base and the growth of Snapchat that its a pretty obvious choice to be on there. So Im not saying its necessary to be on there, because nobody needs to be anywhere, but I think its a wise move the way things are moving with the social space right now. Whats the key  to success on Snapchat? I would say, the top tips to success are showing behind the scenes, showing your personality and showing the in-between moments, because thats what Snapchat is all about. Its not a perfectly polished Instagram post thats filtered. Its not a perfectly crafted blog post. The beauty of Snapchat is the fact that it is those in between, raw, real moments. So I think for success I would say, be real, be you and make sure youre showing people the parts that they dont see on other social networks. What exactly are stories on Snapchat? Snapchat and the story element is content that basically self destroys, yeah. So if I was to post a snap now, within 24 hours at this precise moment that snap would disappear and so on and so forth. So the story is the public area. So you record a snap. That would be a photo or it would be a video and you would send it to your story. And that is where people view the story. So its the bit that the public can see. If youre settings is public, everybody can see your story. Sending regular snaps is  just person-to-person? Yeah, you can do that in the private messaging facility. So you can swipe across and theres a private messaging facility, which really lends itself nicely to the story as well because it encourages much deeper, meaningful conversations as a result of that story. So you almost take conversations to that space. Once someones interacting with your story, you can deepen the conversation and get to know somebody better. So its great for relationship building. How do you get more followers on Snapchat? With regard to followers in Snapchat you have something called a Snapcode, as Im sure youre aware. So we can take that Snapcode, download it and we can upload that to different social platforms. So if youve got a really nice Twitter network or a good network on Facebook, you can very easily shell out Snapcode or your Snapchat URL to those different platforms. You can also engage in others. Lots of people using Snapchat hashtag on Twitter. So look in there to see what conversations are going on around Snapchat. And I think youll find as well were seeing an increasing number of people using their Snapchat images as their profile pictures under the social networks as well. So thats a great way to get new followers as well. And also repurposing your content.  Snapchats got a beautiful ability where youre able to download single Snaps or your whole story. And downloading a single Snap is perfect, because you can then upload that to Twitter. So people can see almost a tiny snapshot. And then you can direct them and say, If you want to join in with the rest of the story, hop on over to Snapchat. Images vs. video: What content works best on Snapchat? I wouldnt say, theres a better one. It all depends on the context of the story, on the particular day, at the particular moment. I think what we all seen though is people being very, very creative with the way they do it. Theres some real artists out there on Snapchat as well that are great at drawing onto images and drawing onto videos as well. So I would say that a good combination of the two in the right context, at the right time is absolutely key. So I wouldnt suggest one over the other really. What mistakes do you see brands  making on Snapchat? I actually think Snapchat is very different to the other social platforms. Theres a lot of people rising through the ranks, sort of turning themselves into Snapchat gurus, which is absolutely fine. But I think Snapchat is a platform where self made strategy is key, yeah. And I think how one person does something, another person will do it very differently. So I think a mistake that people make is trying to imitate what other people are doing rather than just following what feels natural to them. So I think if you feel natural doing something, then go with what feels natural to you, because theres no right or wrong. How can you use Snapchat for talent attraction and recruiting? I think from a recruitment agency point of view, certainly from a communication point of view, I think theres a great, great structure there in order to be able to conduct conversations with potential candidates. It could be the recruitment agency might be talking about a particular job position within their snap story. And then deepening those conversations through those matters of audio chat bubbles and video chat bubbles within the private messaging section. So I think its from a communicative point of view, it lends itself very, very nicely to that. What is the return on investment of Snapchat and how do you measure it? The ROI of Snapchat for everybody is going to be different. It depends on your why and I suppose your own personal goal with Snapchat.  I think if youre looking at the ROI right now, its not necessarily to look at it as in a monetary  value, but to look at it from a relationship point of view and think, this is a platform where people have real, raw access to you. Its a platform that provides a lot of access, more access than any other platform out there right now, I believe. So I think that looking at an ROI in terms of money right now is probably not the right approach. But if you look at it and think, Im here to build relationships, to get to know people, then thats where the real ROI will be, because those relationships form. And as relationships form, trust is established. And with trust comes buying power. What apps and tools are useful to use with Snapchat? Youre starting to see now a lot of different apps coming into the market. Particularly on Twitter youre seeing apps coming in where theyre almost like Snapchat directories. Theres an example of one, 1000 snappers.  Theres one thats recently  launched, Ghostcodes,  I believe theyre actively  on Twitter. So yeah, theres lots of sort of businesses coming through the ranks where its sort of like a directory, where it makes it easier for you to be able to understand different types of snappers. So you can connect with people easier. Whats next for Snapchat? How will the platform evolve? Who knows? Who knows where its going to go? Its evolved so much. Even in the last couple of months weve just seen Snapchat 2.0 come out. Theres lots of different changes to the way that were able to communicate on there. And all I can say right now is its an exciting time to see where it is going because within like the last couple of weeks, we now have so many more options to communicate with our community over there within one platform, which is incredible. It combined text, picture, video, audio. It makes conversation very easy. So I think from sort of a relationship strengthening point of view, were only going to see that grow through Snapchat and Im excited to see where they take it. The Benefits of Communicating Up This is a continuation of a previous post titled “How to find the right balance communicating with your boss”, where I described steps for making sure you find the right communication balance with your manager. Here I’d like to show you the next step â€" communicating across an organization, not just to your manager and immediate team. In case you didn’t know it, your manager’s job is to communicate the progress of your team to other parts of the organization. When your boss asks you “how did the campaign perform?” or “when will that patch go live?” it’s because your manager needs to tell the rest of the company, including upper management, how his/her team is performing and what they are accomplishing. The opportunity for you lies in communicating some of these high level details directly to other parts of the organization. You can increase your influence with your manager and your visibility throughout the company by assisting more and more with collecting and presenting useful information. For example, offer to take all of the team’s reports and put them into the template your manager uses to send to his/her manager. You could also, take your stats and bundle it with the high-level messages that your manager was appending. Beyond that, you can ask your manager if you can help by presenting the reports or sending them out directly on your manager’s behalf. Two very beneficial things will start happening to you when you hit this point: Your manager will rely on you to collect, deliver and present this information. This can fast track you into exclusive meetings with your manager and with your executive leadership. The people who listen to or receive your reports will start relying on you to answer more in-depth questions which will give you a chance for even more valuable exposure. What you’ve done is become a hub of information that both your manager and other managers rely on. It means some extra work but it will be worth the effort when you see the opportunities that come your way.

Our time is constantly divided between too many to-dos, action items or competing activities. Sometimes we just need to stop the madness. The Facts Data proves that multi-tasking is counter-productive and there is growing evidence that our overuse of technology is zapping our creativity. In this recent survey, only 9% of workers said they would go tech-free during vacation. This is what they report: Lee  Hecht  Harrison  surveyed 639 workers throughout the U.S. via an online poll asking, “Do you unplug on vacation?” The results were as follows: All electronic devices stay home 9% I take my laptop or tablet 15% I take my smart phone 43% I take all my electronic devices 33% The Fix In todays US News World Report article, I talk about how to set expectations so you can have a stress-free vacation and more about the benefits of unplugging!
